Bristol Spine Surgeon

Mark Nowell

Mark Nowell is a Consultant Neurosurgical Spine Surgeon based in Bristol. Mark specialises in the treatment of degenerative disease affecting the neck and back. He places great emphasis on:

Patient choice

Providing information in a way patients understand and empowering them to make the right decision.

Patient-centred care

Treating patients as individuals, listening to their hopes and concerns and tailoring advice accordingly.

Kindness

Understanding impact on quality of life and providing empathy.

Timely interventions

Delivering care within a time frame to get the best outcomes.

Mark’s philosophy is patient-centred care, clear choices and supported decision-making. He is a proponent of minimally invasive interventions to reduce recovery time and restore function more quickly.

Mark records outcome measures for all his patients undergoing a surgical procedure on the British Spine Registry. This allows him to monitor the progress of his patients after any intervention.

Dual-trained Neurosurgical Spine Surgeon

Spine surgery has traditionally been undertaken by either orthopaedic spine surgeons or neurosurgeons. Modern spine surgery training now brings these disciplines together as part of the natural progression to advance spinal surgery.

Mark has completed complex spine surgery fellowships at Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, Queen Square Hospital, London and Leeds General Infirmary. He was awarded the British Association of Spinal Surgery Travelling Fellowship in 2017.

He is a new generation of spine surgeons with experience in orthopaedic and neurosurgical training, offering the full spectrum of surgical treatments.

Treatments for spine conditions

Mark offers the following treatments for spinal degenerative disease:

Pain injections

Pain injections can be excellent treatments for flare-ups of arm and leg pain.

Considerations for surgery

When conservative management fails and benefits of treatment outweigh risks.

Anterior cervical decompression and fusion

Definitive surgery for arm pain and cervical myelopathy.

Posterior cervical decompression

Less invasive surgical treatment for arm pain.

Lumbar decompression / microdiscectomy

Treatment of leg pain and neurogenic claudication.
